New streaming music app helps listeners learn while they listen.
What makes Mozart’s music so great? What does a crescendo sound like? Music lovers now can discover the story behind classical favorites such as Bach’s Goldberg Variation 2 or Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 8 with Soundsnips, a free-to-download app available now on the iTunes store.
Created by Classical KUSC, Soundsnips is a new way to appreciate classical music while learning interesting facts about the composition, the instruments being played, the musicians and the composers — all without interrupting the music. As each selection plays, written comments and explanations pop up on your iPhone, iPod or iPad screen.
“We are thrilled to provide this free resource to classical music fans as well as those new to classical music” says Brenda Barnes, president of USC Radio.
Soundsnips helps listeners become classical aficionados without having to learn an instrument or read complicated scores by providing relevant, fascinating stories behind the music. By combining fun facts with interesting tunes,
Soundsnips is a new form of story-driven music discovery that engages users on an educational level.
“Soundsnips offers casual listeners a new way to appreciate music through story,” says Chris Mendez, director of KUSC Interactive, which developed the app. “As a nonprofit, we’re excited to continue developing new platforms for classical music and arts communities online.”
Soundsnips works like an iPod but without the hassle of downloads. To become an expert on Haydn or Brahms, simply select a track and start learning. Listeners can choose from Baroque, Romantic, Classical and Twentieth Century selections. The app is designed for the iPhone4 and higher.
Early reviews have been highly positive. “5 stars for music knowledge!” enthused one reviewer. “Such an intuitive way to indulge in music. Entertaining yet educational,” wrote another. “A wonderful and innovative way to enjoy your music,” penned a third.   Â
