USC celebrates Black History Month with full schedule of events
The calendar features an array of virtual, hybrid and in-person events from students, faculty, staff and alumni groups.
USC’s commemoration of Black History Month is underway, and this year’s theme is “Celebrating Black Joy: Embracing Health and Vitality.” The celebration features an array of virtual, hybrid and in-person events from students, faculty, staff and alumni groups that touch on various topics such as mental health, intersectionality, Black excellence and Black joy. Wednesday, Feb. 9: Conversation with USC’s first chief inclusion officer, Christopher Manning
Join the USC Gould Alumni Association for an important conversation with Christopher Manning, USC’s first vice president and chief inclusion and diversity officer, and alumna Amber Finch, on culture, community and change at USC.
Tuesday, Feb. 15: Community Storytelling for Policy Change
In times of turmoil, storytelling can be a catalyst for policy change as well as a symbol for healing and resistance. Join Lora King, Shinese Harlins-Kilgore, the Rev. Najuma Smith-Pollard and Allissa V. Richardson for a vibrant discussion moderated by Erroll Southers on the intergenerational impact of storytelling and its symbiotic relationship with public policy. The interactive event is presented by the USC Black Alumni Association; the Center for the Political Future at the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences; the USC Price School of Public Policy; and the USC Price Safe Communities Institute.
Wednesday, Feb. 23: FRO (Films Reflecting Ourselves) Fest Returns to the USC Fisher Museum of Art
The Center for Black Cultural and Student Affairs, the USC Fisher Museum of Art, the USC School of Cinematic Arts and the African American Cinema Society will screen films by Black writers, producers, directors, and actors from USC. The annual festival provides a platform to tell and celebrate Black stories encompassing this year’s theme, “Black joy.” Enjoy an evening of music, food, and short films.
Thursday, Feb. 24: Paint Night at USC Fisher Museum
CBCSA and the USC Fisher Museum of Art will host artists of all skill levels for an interactive and fun paint night under the stars. USC alumna Keviette Mino, who led the design process for the CBCSA mural, will guide participants to create a work of art around the “Celebrating Black Joy: Embracing Health and Vitality!” theme. Space is limited.
Friday, Feb. 25: Closing event
Tentatively planned for 11 a.m.-3 p.m. on McCarthy Quad; details to come.
