Classical Music Returns to the South Bay and Peninsula
Classical KDFC can now be heard on 104.9 FM in the South Bay and Peninsula of Northern California.
After KDFC was sold to a subsidiary of USC Radio in January 2011, it had been serving San Francisco on 90.3 FM, the North Bay and Napa/Sonoma on 89.9 FM, the Ukiah-Lakeport area on 92.5 FM and Los Gatos on 90.3 FM.
On June 7, KDFC received final approval from the FCC to fully restore service to the South Bay and Peninsula on 104.9 FM, starting June 15.
Bill Lueth, president of KDFC, thanked listeners for their patience and support in an e-mail message. “When KDFC was sold in January 2011, we made a commitment to keep classical music on the radio in the Bay Area,” he wrote. “Nearly 18 months and five radio stations later, we’ve done it!”
Classical KDFC, which has close partnerships with arts organizations including the San Francisco Symphony and the San Francisco Opera, is one of two nonprofit listener-supported classical music stations operated by USC Radio as broadcast services of the University of Southern California. The other, Classical KUSC, operates from downtown Los Angeles at 91.5 FM in Los Angeles and Santa Clarita; 88.5 KPSC in Palm Springs, 91.1 KDSC in Thousand Oaks, 88.7 KQSC in Santa Barbara and 99.7 in Morro Bay/San Luis Obispo.
Both stations are live-streamed on the Web, attracting listeners from around the globe at KDFC.com and KUSC.org.
