Army and USC to Cut Ribbon for Opening of ARL West

WHAT: The U.S. Army Research Laboratory and the University of Southern California will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony and tour of ARL West. Part of the open campus initiative, ARL West is an effort to co-locate Army research and development personnel on the West Coast in order to gain access to subject matter experts, technical centers and universities not well represented on the East Coast. The new facility, based at the USC Institute for Creative Technologies, will house up to 70 researchers and is expected to be the laboratory’s largest university research outpost.

WHEN: 3:00-4:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 13 (tours and demos will run until 6:00 p.m.)

WHERE: 12015 Waterfront Drive, Playa Vista, California

WHO: Speakers include Lt. Gen. Larry Wyche, deputy commanding general of the U.S. Army Materiel Command, Maj. Gen. John F. Wharton, commanding general of the U.S. Army Research, Development and Engineering Command, Dr. Thomas P. Russell, ARL Director, C.L. Max Nikias, USC President, and White House Office of Science and Technology Policy Assistant Director for Defense Programs, Dr. Chris Fall.

Demos: Technology demos will include the latest ICT research in virtual and augmented reality, the latest discoveries from the Army Research Lab and more.

SimSensei: A virtual human interviewer that can identify signals of depression and other mental health issues by providing real-time tracking and analysis of a person’s facial expressions, eye gaze, body posture and voice.
Digital Actors – See Academy Award-winning facial scanning technology used in Avatar, Spider-Man 2, Benjamin Button and more that transforms a real person into a convincing digital double.

Rapid Avatar Generator: A two minute-process that creates realistic video game-ready versions of people using commodity hardware and ICT software.
ELITE: A virtual human- based training system for teaching leadership and counseling skills.

3-D “Hologram-like” Projections: This demo requires no glasses and projects a perspective correct 3-D image of a real person.
New Dimensions in Testimony collaboration with USC’s Shoah Foundation, which aims to preserve the ability to ask questions of a Holocaust survivor long into the future.

Bravemind: An immersive virtual environment for use by trained therapists to help treat combat-related post-traumatic stress disorder.

Terrain: An effort to create the most realistic, accurate and informative 3-D representations of the physical and non-physical landscape for use in training and simulations.
