Carol Mauch Amir named senior vice president and general counsel

Carol Mauch Amir has been appointed senior vice president and general counsel, USC President C. L. Max Nikias announced.

In this capacity, she serves as a key strategic, business and legal adviser to the university’s senior leadership and oversees all legal matters for USC and its subsidiaries. She will continue to manage the Office of the General Counsel.

The promotion reflects an increase in the scope of Amir’s responsibilities, particularly with the expansion of the Keck Medicine of USC enterprise and the overall growth of the university.

Amir is a member of the President’s Cabinet, bringing her valuable expertise and strategic input to the university’s business decisions, and she serves on the USC Health System Board. She has become an exceptional sounding board for the president, as well as her colleagues, on a range of issues, he noted.

Legal duties

She oversees the department of Risk Management and Insurance and will continue in her role as secretary of the university, a position in which she oversees the corporate records of the university and its subsidiaries.

Amir is a member of the board of the Women’s Leadership Council and the Los Angeles County Bar Association: Corporate Law Executive Committee. In 2011, the Los Angeles Business Journal honored Amir as the Corporate Counsel of the Year for Nonprofit Businesses.

She is a member of the California State Bar, the Los Angeles County Bar Association and the National Association of College and University Attorneys.

Amir joined USC as a university counsel in 1999 and steadily assumed additional responsibilities, becoming associate general counsel, managing general counsel and ultimately general counsel in 2008. Prior to her arrival at USC, she was an associate at the law firm of Latham & Watkins, specializing in health care-related corporate transactions. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Wesleyan University and graduated cum laude from the New York University School of Law.
