Massive USC Village Construction Project Hits Halfway Mark With Spire-Raising Spectacle

Contact: Eddie North-Hager or Robert Perkins at (213) 740-2215 or uscnews@usc.edu

WHAT: A crane will hoist a 12,700-pound roof spire eight stories and deposit it atop the McCarthy Honors College, crowning the tallest building in the USC Village and marking the halfway point in the Village’s construction. The spire will be signed by donors, USC administrators and elected officials just prior to its ascension, celebrating their invaluable contributions to the city-redefining project.

Construction workers have poured 90,000 cubic yards of concrete — enough to build a sidewalk from Los Angeles to San Francisco — with 23 million pounds of rebar to form the walls and foundation of the construction of the Village’s five buildings.

It’s taken 3,200 construction professionals roughly 850,000 combined hours of work so far. With the successful capping, the builders will kick off the next phase of the project, beautifying the structures with 2,500 exterior panels and framing the interior walls.

The $700 million, 15-acre residential and retail development is by far the largest in USC history and one of the largest ever in South Los Angeles. Construction began in 2014, and is on track to be completed and occupied by the Fall 2017 semester.
