WHAT: USC will launch the construction of USC Iovine and Young Hall, which will house the USC Jimmy Iovine and Andre Young Academy for Arts, Technology and the Business of Innovation.

The much-heralded academy was founded in 2013 with a $70 million visionary gift from entrepreneurs Jimmy Iovine and Andre “Dr. Dre” Young to teach critical thinking and nurture unbridled creativity at the intersection of three essential areas: art and design; engineering and computer science; and business and venture management. The Iovine and Young Academy offers a disruptive, multidisciplinary education where students straddle technology, business, and the arts in an effort to form a new generation of creative leaders and executives.

The Iovine and Young Hall is scheduled to open in 2019. Students will work and learn in a facility that will house approximately 10,000 square feet of makerspaces:

·         Fabrication labs for metal, wood, plastics, electronics.

·         3D printing and scanning, and 2D large-format printing.

·         Media labs for photo, video and audio capture and editing, and immersive and interactive environments.

The workshops and flexible studios will emphasize collaboration, engender innovation and lead to the development of startups.

The Academy, which now boasts 114 students, will graduate its inaugural class of 30 in May 2018. Students are already developing apps, strategizing global Wi-Fi, and exploring augmented virtual reality hardware while also attracting funding from well-known venture capitalists and the attention of leading firms.
