April 9, 2013 – As we approach the election of a new mayor for Los Angeles, NBC4 Southern California and its Spanish-language partner Telemundo52, 89.3 KPCC-FM and the USC Sol Price School of Public Policy have joined together to co-host a mayoral debate between City Councilman Eric Garcetti and City Controller Wendy Greuel on Monday, April 22 at USC’s Louis B. Mayer Auditorium on its Health Sciences Campus in Boyle Heights. The debate will be broadcast live and commercial-free on NBC4, Telemundo52 and KPCC from 7-8 p.m.
NBC4 chief political reporter Conan Nolan will moderate the debate. Three expert panelists will present questions to the candidates: Frank Stoltze, KPCC crime and politics reporter; Ana Patricia Candiani, Telemundo52 news anchor; and Jack H. Knott, dean of the USC Sol Price School of Public Policy.
The debate will cover a wide range of critical issues facing the city right now, including jobs and the economy, pension reform, a growing budget problem, and public safety.
NBC4 veteran reporter Conan Nolan, who covers state and local politics, is well known for his interviews with top political leaders as the host of “News Conference,” the longest running political/public affairs television program in Southern California, which airs Sundays at 9 a.m.
“NBC4 is bringing this debate and critical city issues directly to our viewers to help them make an informed decision on Election Day,” said Todd Mokhtari, vice president of news at NBC4 Southern California.
“With the Hispanic population at nearly 50 percent in Los Angeles County alone, there isn’t one issue that doesn’t impact Hispanic voters,” Celia Chavez, president and general manager of Telemundo52. “As a leading Spanish-language network, we look forward to providing our viewers in-depth information about the candidates and their policies to assist them in making an informed decision on Election Day.”
“Debates between candidates for major offices like mayor of Los Angeles help better inform voters, and are at the core of our public-service mission,” said Russ Stanton, KPCC’s vice president for content.
“The USC Sol Price School of Public Policy’s mission is always to improve the quality of life for people and their communities. Providing this platform for both candidates to answer the important questions aligns with our commitment to serving local voters,” USC Price School Dean Jack H. Knott said. “We are pleased to host the debate and to continue to connect USC to the surrounding community.”
