President Obama nominated appeals court Judge Merrick Garland to fill the U.S. Supreme Court vacancy left by the late Justice Antonin Scalia. USC experts, including one who was a clerk for Garland, Sam Erman, explain the legal and political questions surrounding what has become a source of contention between the U.S. Senate and Obama.

About the nominee
Sam Erman, USC law professor and constitutional law expert, clerked for the nominee, Garland, in 2009 and 2010 at the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.
Erman can discuss Garland’s ideology, demeanor and record. He can also share stories and anecdotes about his time clerking for Garland.
